Part 1 of the Signature Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting prepares students for the assessment component of the programme (Part 2).This is a training course designed by Signamic for students who already have advanced knowledge of both English and BSL. This course provides you with theoretical knowledge and gives you the opportunity to try out new interpreting techniques in a safe environment and obtain feedback on your work. The course content is based on the NVQ qualification specification and prepares you for the relevant Signature NVQ qualification, which consists of 6 units: Units A1 – preparation skills, B1 – One-Way Interpreting, C1 – Two-Way interpreting, D1 – Evaluation and PDP, E1 – Sight Translation and G – Co-working.

Theoretical aspects of interpreting will be taught, and alongside this practical sessions will be conducted to reinforce newly-gained knowledge. Students will be given assignments to complete on topics such as preparing for an assignment, obtaining feedback and developing self-evaluation techniques. The main themes, which the course covers, are professionalism, ethics & dilemmas, preparation, exploring interpreting skills, discourse analysis, using technology, team interpreting, looking after yoursellf.

The course is classroom based and the teaching team is made up a group of qualified experienced MRSLIs and deaf professionals and professional trainers, plus both deaf and hearing role models. The course uses a variety of teaching methods including group and pair work activities, role play and simulations, demonstrations, discussions, PowerPoint presentations, video, conversation, practicals using modern technology.

Certificate/Progression
 
Once you have entered the training, you can apply for JTI with NRCPD via our IIDP programme, if you are deemed safe to practice at the interview by our IIDP assessor. On successful completion, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance and you may progress to Part 2 of the programme.
