Signature has just released a brand-new qualification, the Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation. You can download the qualification specification here. This qualification is aimed at people wishing to seek employment opportunities as a professional translator working from English to BSL.
Signamic has been working in partnership with Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) to deliver a Signature Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation programme. This project is funded by Nominet.
Shortly a group of Deaf people will graduate as qualified English to BSL Translators holding the Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation.
Here is how the specific units associated with this qualification are broken down:
PTra1: Maintain skills and systems for managing translation tasks
PTra2: Manage new translation assignments
PTra3: Translate written texts from one language into another
PTra4: Develop your performance as a professional translator
Int6E1: Support sign Language interpreting through sight translations of routine written documents
This course has generated a great deal of interest in the UK as this is the first time Deaf people who work as translators have been able to obtain professional qualifications equal to those of their Sign Language Interpreter peers.
If you are wondering what a Sign Language Translator does, here is a list of possible activities:
- Television: in-vision interpreting, live and pre-recorded
- Theatre and movies: translating from an autocue
- Conferences: platform, on-stage or off-stage autocue interpreting
- Websites: corporate and Deaf websites
- DVDs: corporate, educational and voluntary sector
- Text: video letter, books and documents
- Sight translation: translating a short document to a Deaf person on the spot
Buoyed by these exciting news, Signamic are offering the UK’s first ever Signature Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Translation training and assessment courses available to members of the general public.
The Part 1 component of this programme commences in January 2012, which provides training in professional skills and knowledge. This training course is delivered in 2-day blocks once a month over 8 months.
The Part 2 component commences in September 2012.
